Last summer my husband and I spent four glorious days in Saugatuck, Michigan with our children and grandchildren.  Our vacation rental home was called Butterfly Cottage and was located steps away from charming shops and restaurants as well as the riverfront.

As if our happy memories weren’t enough our wonderful son and daughter-in-law sent us a heart felt thank you card and was enclosed with a very generous gift card for Bern’s Steak House.

It is hard to describe the excitement that we felt in the prospect of finally being able to dine at what we had often heard referred to as one of the finest restaurants on the eastern seaboard.

Needless to say the experience that we had complete with a three course aged steak dinner and two marvelous glasses of wine each as well as a trip to the famous Harry Waugh’s Dessert Room did not disappoint.

We were even invited to take a tour of their well organized and bustling kitchen.  Last but not least there was a visit to their world renowned wine room that houses over 70,000 bottles in its collection.

After our remarkable experience including a private audience with a very talented pianist who played during dessert and the attentive and perfectly executed service of our waiter who had been at Bern’s for nearly 30 years I described our experience to our children as an amusement park for old foodies.  We were elated at every twist and turn of what I can only describe as the most perfect dinner imaginable.

Go To “The Joint” for Burgers and so much more..

For under $8 you can enjoy one of the best burgers in all of Tampa Bay at the The Joint.

Owner Mike Anderson has been a well known and very successful sports bar owner in St. Pete for many years. He always seems to have the same winning combination of great food at a great value in a not so trendy yet easy enough to access locale.

His newest venture opened last February and is situated near the Tyrone Mall off of 34th Avenue North.

The Joint like many of Mike’s operations has a no frills, but fun atmosphere.  A friendly bar staff is there to welcome you and make you feel right at home.

We ordered the Bleu Burger for $7.77 and it was perfectly done and placed on a lightly buttered and toasted bun with a side of Borracho Beans. We also ordered a basket of waffle fries and two Yuengling’s. Our total bill was around $20.

The menu describes the “Gooey” Burger to be one of the best in all of the U.S.A.  Judging by the one that was served to the very nice lady sitting next to me I have no problem believing that to be true.

Next time in we may try the Baby Back Ribs or the The Big ‘Ol Fish Sandwich which are also offered at incredibly low prices.  However, it may be difficult to pass up the lightly breaded southern style chicken livers or the fried bologna sandwich.

At these prices we may very well be stopping in weekly to say, “hello” to the crew at The Joint.

Tampa Bay Gives Remarkable Service “On The Road”

Christmas at Disney Springs in Orlando, Florida presents a whole world of possibilities to all who travel there.

Just the eateries alone are as diverse as the most ethnic of big city neighborhoods.

You can experience fish and chips and Irish dancers at the Ragland Road Pub. Of course there is always plenty of Guinness flowing and talented folk singers from the Emerald Isle on the stage to delight.

If you’re feeling like taking in a Cuban floor show then Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s award winning restaurant Bongo’s is the place to be.  For passers by the smell of freshly baked empanadas fill the air.

This past summer a barbecue restaurant was added to the mix by the name of the Polite Pig.

There you can order a butcher block board for two that includes pork shoulder, smoked chicken and ribs, as well as two generous sides. If bourbon is what you fancy you may want to experiment with a whisky flight starting at $25 that will include a tasting of Woodford Reserve, Basel Hayden, and Four Roses Single Barrel.

For anyone craving American fare the fast food style D-Luxe Burger offers not only the juiciest burgers I have had to date, but also some of the best onion rings that can be found.

My favorite experience on our most recent visit was having drinks and appetizers on the roof top deck of Paddlefish. The recently renovated river boat allows you to be seated high enough to take in every thing that sparkles below.

Don’t let the holidays pass you by without visiting the always enchanting and now very upscale Disney Springs.
